Oral Medicine is the specialty field of dentistry that deals with the assessment, diagnosis, and primarily non-surgical management of conditions affecting the oral mucosa, jaws and adjacent anatomical structures, as well as patients with oro-facial pain.

Oral Radiology, also known as dental and maxillofacial radiology, is the specialty of dentistry concerned with performance and interpretation of diagnostic imaging used for examining the craniofacial, dental and adjacent structures.

The scope of Oral Medicine includes the identification and management of oral mucosal conditions, including malignant and pre-malignant oral disease such as:

  • White, red and pigmented oral lesions
  • Ulcers and blisters eg. recurrent aphthous ulceration, pemphigus, pemphigoid.
  • Oral manifestions of systemic disease eg. Lichen planus, lupus erythematosus, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia eg. Drug related, post-radiotherapy.
  • Other salivary gland pathology eg. mucoceles, sialoliths, sialadenitis.
  • Orofacial pain eg. Trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic pain, burning mouth syndrome.
  • Oral Mucosal Infections eg. candidiasis, human herpes viral infections
  • Polyps, papillomas and epulides.
  • Assessment and management of the oral complications of haematological malignancy including oral graft versus host disease in haematopoietic stem-cell transplant recipients.
  • Assessment, management of the oral complications of head and neck cancer treatment. Including pre-radiotherapy dental assessments.
  • Management of oral sequelae of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
  • Assessment and monitoring of patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.
  • Organising and co-ordinating dental treatment for patients with complex medical conditions, including hereditary and acquired coagulopathies and organ transplant recipients.
